We're partnering with Town Hall Seattle to present "How Facebook, Amazon, and Google Threaten Democracy" with author Jonathan Taplin.

Move Fast and Break Things, by writer and film producer Jonathan Taplin, tells the story of how a small group of libertarian entrepreneurs hijacked the internet, creating three monopoly firms—Facebook, Amazon, and Google. The men who founded these companies shaped online culture to mirror their own values. The environment they created, tolerates piracy, promotes opaque business practices, and subordinates the privacy of individual users. It also has had serious impacts on the music, film, television, publishing, and news industries. Taplin contends that the situation poses a real threat to democracy, as more and more Americans receive their news, music, and other forms of entertainment from this narrow pool. Taplin, who has managed the tours for such greats as Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, and The Band, draws from his own half-century career as a music and film producer and early pioneer of online streaming video. He offers new ways to think about the design of the internet and specifically the way we interact with the companies that monopolize it.
